One of skateboarding's coolest, DIY events is slated for October 12, 2024

By Stephen Krcmar

Mecca is Islam's spiritual headquarters. It's where Muhammad was born and where the symbol of Muslim unity, the Kaaba, is located. All devout and able-bodied Muslims try to make one pilgrimage here during their lifetime.

As far as that pilgrimage goes, the same can be said for skateboarders making the journey to the Mecca Ditch Race. Less than 20 miles from the Las Vegas Strip, the Mecca Ditch is extraordinary. Surrounded by mountains, desert, and paradox: it’s deep in the wilderness and you can see the Strip at night.

The old irrigation ditches—there are a few of them—are perfect for skateboarding. Twice a year, Tye Donnelly holds next-level events here, complete with food, music, and great skateboarding.

The last one was on April 20 and it was a blast. We’ll be writing more about that event in the future. In the meantime, check out So Cal Ditch Skaters on Facebook for videos of the last event.

The date for the fall event was just released: October 12. Mark it on your calendar and start making plans. You won’t regret it.

If you can throw down a few bucks to make this event a reality, the GoFundMe is here.
