All the Pump Track Fun
Bikes and skateboards are two of the most important things in my life. They always have been.
I first fell in love with skateboarding in the 1980s. Ollies were just becoming a thing, kickflips were mostly for sponsored folks, and I was just a train ride from the Brooklyn Banks.
My buddies and I started a skate zine, and that’s where I published my first gear review. I was one of the first people to interview a teenage Mike Vallely, a shy kid who still lived with his folks and was penning poetry.
Skateboards were my second love. Years ago, I fell for BMX bikes and logged loads of miles on a Mongoose BMX bike. I even picked up a paper route as an excuse to ride more.
Being on wheels and standing sideways helped me explore the globe. Whether I was working as a bike messenger in New York City, where the only laws were physics, or writing about some of these activities for publications like The New York Times, Outside, and Gear Patrol.
I’ve been lucky to work in the bike and action sports world for most of my career. I’ve worked in marketing and creative roles (lead copywriter, social media director, associate creative director) for brands like Mammoth Mountain and the online cycling platform Zwift.
I fell back in love with skateboarding at the Inglewood Pump Track. New to skating transitions, it took me a handful of sessions to even make it around the perimeter. Six months later, I bought a dirt jumper.
I live in Los Angeles with my wonderful wife, stepkid, and three cats.
